KUCHING (Feb 1):  The tallest flagpole project in Sarawak is a good suggestion from the private sector, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

He said the ministry encourages the private sector to help not just the tourism sector but other sectors as well.

“Everybody should work together to make sure our economy is well. We should try our best to make sure that the economy can turn around as soon as possible for the sake of our people,” he told reporters after his working visit to the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters here today.

The project, which is expected to cost about RM30 million, will be erected in Petra Jaya.

It will be funded by the private sector as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) contribution in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Sarawak as a party to the formation of Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Tiong urged social media users to help disseminate meaningful news about the country to the world instead of talking about negative issues daily.

“Where possible, those on social media should cooperate by not posting negative issues only. Otherwise, tourists wouldn’t want to come to our country.

“As the minister, I will try my best and do my best to improve tourist destinations,  especially in Sarawak,” he said.

During his visit, Tiong had a closed-door meeting with Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri.

On the things discussed, he said he had requested for additional tourist police personnel, not just for Kuching but other areas like Sibu and Bintulu, while expressing his satisfaction with what the police have done for the tourism sector.

“CP is is concerned and helpful enough in assisting the ministry. He said he will help us.

“He has given me a briefing this morning, and gave me the chance to understand where there are weaknesses so that we can improve together,” he added.
