KUCHING (March 24): Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will join six other local authorities in Sarawak and several private sector partners for Earth Hour 2023 tomorrow by switching off non-essential lights.

Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said some of the MBKS’ facilities such as parks and buildings will be in darkness from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

The facilities involved are Kuching South City Hall, Taman Kuching, Dewan Masyarakat, Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre, Stutong Community Market, and Friendship Park.

“The private sector, such as hotels and shopping malls under MBKS jurisdiction, will also be joining us in this movement,” Wee told a press conference today.

The other local authorities that will be switching off non-essential lights are Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Miri City Council (MCC), Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC).

Among those from the private sector taking part in Earth Hour are Farley at its Kuching and Samarahan malls, Ibraco, Everrise, Chagee, Kuching Park Hotel, Imperial Hotel, Kingwood Hotel, Boulevard Shopping Mall, Vivacity, Green Heights Mall, and iCats.

Wee urged the public to join in the movement to help amplify its mission and impact.

“We would like to appeal to the public, especially, to turn off their lights just for that hour.

“For the private sector, other than those who have agreed to participate, you can take your own initiative to reduce the use of electricity during Earth Hour,” he said.

The switching off of lights for MBKS will be shown live on Wee’s Facebook page from 8pm.

Among those present at the press conference were MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos, MPP deputy secretary Henry Jalin Watt, and representatives from the various participating partners.

Earth Hour is a global movement that unites supporters in over 190 countries and territories every year.

It takes place on the last Saturday of March at 8.30pm, where people take action and raise awareness of the issues facing the planet.
