SIBU (March 25): Switching off lights for an hour may seem like a small gesture, but with everyone’s effort, significant energy saving can be achieved and the greenhouse gas emissions reduced.

Councillor Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said that small actions could make a big difference in the fight against climate change.

“Participating in Earth Hour by turning off the lights for an hour can have several benefits and save the earth. It can also save a significant amount of energy.

“When we save energy, we reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources. It helps to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” he said when met when participating in the campaign tonight.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) turned off the lights at 15 locations, including street lights, at 8.30pm tonight to mark Earth Hour.

The locations were Sibu Gateway and Jalan Kampung Nyabor’s street lights, Ling’s Garden, Sibu Central Market (facing temple and Khoo Peng Liong back lane), Sibu Central Market (middle portion together with Jalan Channel street lights), Sibu Central Market (car parks and Yu’s Dolphin), SMC Library, Town Square Phase 1 and Jalan Bujang Suntong street lights, Rejang Port Authority, Wisma Sanyan (external lighting), University Technology Sarawak (UTS), Kolej Laila Taib (KLT), Tanahmas Hotel/KFC/Sugarbun/Garden Hotel/Walkway in front of Tanahmas Hotel, Petronas petrol station and Shell petrol station (Sri Minyak Tenaga Sdn Bhd).
