SARIKEI (June 23): Various programmes and activities will be held in the Sarikei Division to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Sarawak’s Independence this year.

Sarikei Resident Michael Ronnie Lenggong said the highlight of the celebration will be the Merdeka Kembara Convoy on June 25.

“The Merdeka Kembara Convoy in the Sarikei Division will start on June 24 in Julau, Sarikei on June 25, Pakan on June 26, and Meradong on June 27.

“The peak event of this celebration will be on June 25 and will take place at Sarikei Civic Centre.

“Among the other events that will take place during this celebration are a digital exhibition, the Merdeka Kembara Convoy, the Sarawak X-tive programme, karaoke competition, Merdeka fun race, free health screenings, and many other side activities like sales booths and entrepreneurs’ stalls,” Michael told reporters yesterday.

According to Michael, the programmes aim to enhance the spirit of patriotism and love for the country among all communities in the state.

“We hope that the programmes and activities held during this celebration will benefit all communities, especially in supporting the state government’s initiatives to strengthen prosperity, harmony, and unity in line with sustainable development in Sarikei and Sarawak as a whole.

“These programmes also serve as a platform to instil a true sense of loyalty to the country and strengthen the spirit of unity among the people of Sarawak.

“Through this opportunity, we hope that the community will actively participate in these programmes and proudly display the Sarawak flag at business premises and residential homes as a sign of support and appreciation for our beloved state of Sarawak,” he added.
