KUCHING (Feb 21): Former Samariang assemblywoman Datuk Sharifah Mordiah Tuanku Fauzi has shared the advice given to her by the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to always go to the ground to solve the people’s problems.

The former Samariang assemblywoman was also one of the political secretaries to Taib during his tenure as the then Sarawak Chief Minister.

“Some other Tun’s advice that I will always remember is to speak the truth, no matter how bitter it is, and as the people’s elected representatives, we were advised to go in the field to better understand the situations and find ways to help the people.

“Every time we meet, he would give us (elected representatives) advice and guidance and his advice had, in fact, served as my guidelines in carrying out my duties then,” she told the reporters after paying her last respect to Taib at his residence in Demak Jaya here.

“The news of his passing came as a surprise and I am deeply affected by the fact that I had been working with Tun Pehin Sri since 1979 when I was elected as the people’s representative, as well as a political secretary to him for 10 years,” she said.

Taib, she said, was not only a people’s leader but also a pragmatic leader who had played a pivotal role in Sarawak’s development plans.
