KUCHING (Feb 22): Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) chairman Michael Kong has called on the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) to look into the unreasonably high airline fares for flights from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur.

The one-way flight ticket from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur for this week costs more than RM2,000 and this is shocking and disappointing, said Kong.

“I am deeply concerned and appalled by the exorbitant airfare prices for flights from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur in the coming days.

“This pricing is nothing short of daylight robbery, and it is crucial that immediate action be taken to address this issue,” said Kong, who is also Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen’s special assistant, in a statement.

He also stressed that it is time for Mavcom to fulfill its mandate and uphold the consumers’ rights by looking into the pricing practices of airliners and take decisive action to address this issue.

“It is unacceptable for airliners to engage in profiteering practices that unfairly exploit consumers, especially at a time when the government is actively taking steps to lower the cost of living.

“Mavcom must urgently investigate these exorbitant airfare prices and take appropriate measures to ensure fair and reasonable pricing for air travel,” he asserted.

“It is imperative that Mavcom intervenes to protect the interests of consumers and ensure that air travel remains accessible and affordable for all Malaysians.

“We cannot allow airliners to continue to exploit consumers with unjustifiably high airfare prices, especially during these challenging times,” he said.

The exorbitant pricing of airfare tickets, he added, has not only caused financial strain on travellers but also impeded economic activity and mobility.
