KUCHING (May 23): The Orang Ulu community took center stage at the Gawai Dayak Bazaar 2024 at MJC Batu Kawa tonight, mesmerising the audience with their vibrant and captivating performances during the cultural night.

Gracing the cultural night was Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, who said the bazaar is a reflection of our multiracial community.

“We realised that we (Sarawak) have different races, religions and cultures. Nevertheless we are united as one Malaysian and one Sarawakian,” said Chukpai during the opening ceremony.

He added that unity in diversity is Sarawak’s strength, and with respect and mutual understanding, Sarawakians can build a strong and harmonious society.

Organised by the Federation of Orang Ulu Association Malaysia (Forum), the event started off with a performance by the bamboo band from the Lun Bawang Sarawak Association followed by singing of traditional songs by the Rurum Kelabit Women group.

Also taking the stage were two junior sape players featuring nine-year-old Emmanuel Koritus, a sketch by the Sarawak Bisaya Association, and musical performances by the Sarawak Women Kayan Association, the Sekapan and Lahanan communities.

The Gawai Dayak Bazaar which will end this Sunday (May 26) also included the cultural night performance from the Iban community last night (May 22), and tomorrow night (May 24) the stage will be set for the Bidayuh community.
