KUCHING (May 24): Sarawak police will deploy approximately 400 traffic police for Op Lancar in connection with the Gawai celebration from May 30 to June 4.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the statewide operation will focus on federal, state, and council roads that are prone to road accidents and traffic jams.

“This operation is to ease the flow of traffic, especially during peak hours and also to take action against any traffic offenders,” Mancha said in a statement.

He advised road users to always follow traffic rules and to obey any instructions given by traffic police on the ground.

Strict action will be taken against any traffic offenders, he warned.

“Always remember your loved ones at home and safety must be prioritised,” he added.

Mancha said he hoped traffic flow during the operation would be smooth and that it would help reduce the number of fatal crashes.

Those leaving their homes for the Gawai celebration are advised to inform the police.

This would allow police to plan and conduct patrols in the area to deter any potential housebreakings.
