KOTA KINABALU (Sept 11): Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will develop a 100MW capacity battery energy storage system (BESS) infrastructure as well as a 400MWh energy storage facility in Lahad Datu.
An SESB statement said these are the continued efforts by the company to increase power capacity generation to the Sabah Grid.
SESB said it has received the Letter of Notification (LoN) from the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) for the BESS 100MW/400MWh project, which will be developed in the east coast.
“The trust given by ECoS and the Sabah state government to SESB to implement this BESS project will be carried out with full responsibility and effort to ensure the project is successfully powered within the targeted timeframe,” said SESB.
“With a maximum energy storage capacity of 400 MWh, this project will become the largest BESS system in Southeast Asia.”

SESB chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said this project will increase the reserve margin capacity of the Sabah Grid during peak periods and support the addition of solar energy sources, specifically large scale solar (LSS).
He said that the project will begin this month and is scheduled for completion on June 30, 2025.
Last week, Mohd Yaakob visited the Dam Road Main Intake Substation (PMU) in Lahad Datu to review the project to upgrade the substation to 275kV voltage, which will serve as the injection point for the BESS.
“This project will improve the generation capacity stability of the Sabah Grid, while contributing to environmental sustainability and enhancing the potential for renewable energy generation,” he added.
