BINTULU (Oct 26): The 11th Asean Ministers of Culture and Arts (AMCA) meeting held in Melaka recently yielded encouraging results with focus on the development of the tourism sector among Southeast Asian (Asean) countries.
Malaysia’s Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the meeting served as an important platform for Asean members to foster understanding and create cooperative ties meant to boost the sector in the region, which had been severely affected after the Covid-19 pandemic.
He hailed the theme ‘Crossing Cultures, Building the Future: United in Diversity’ as ‘clearly reflecting the importance of transforming the tourism sector towards creating inclusive, safe and globally competitive tourist destinations’.
“Throughout the meeting, I, along with the representatives, emphasised the aspect of transforming culture and arts to strengthen unity, including fostering understanding and inspiring positive social change across the Asean region,” he said in a statement.
According to Tiong, this year Malaysia will focus on empowering youths, including advancing the creative economy through digital practices, particularly to promote the country’s tourism sector.
The Bintulu MP also expressed his excitement about the country’s leadership in developing a framework for Asean’s creative economic sustainability and the Asean Creative Economy Symposium next year.
At the same time, he expressed appreciation and gratitude to all participating delegations for their high spirits in showcasing their respective cultures.
“What is most important is that all parties reach a consensus to promote their respective cultures for global peace through cooperation in the tourism sector,” said Tiong.
