SARIKEI (Nov 21): Eight people were killed while two others were injured after the vehicles they were in collided on the Sarikei-Sibu stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway this afternoon.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), seven of the deceased were Indonesian nationals, while one was a local.
According to initial report from Bomba, a report was received around 3.40pm before a team from the Sarikei station was dispatched to the scene some 50km away.
At the scene, the Bomba team saw that the collision involved a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a four-wheel-drive pickup truck.
Two victims from the pickup truck had already been rescued by bystanders and were receiving medical attention from paramedics.
Two individuals from the Perodua Alza were ejected from the vehicle during the collision and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The remaining six occupants were still trapped inside the MPV, and were later confirmed dead by paramedics after firefighters used specialised rescue equipment to extricate them.
The bodies of the victims were then handed over to the police for further investigation.
