SIBU (Jan 17): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a tugboat, suspected of violating vessel-related offences under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952, at 7.5 nautical miles northeast of Tanjung Kidurong in Bintulu early today.
According to the Bintulu Maritime Zone Maritime director Capt Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah, the tugboat is believed to have operated without a written notification to the ship registrar regarding the change of captain’s name on the registration certificate.
“MMEA patrol boat, during its Op Permai operation, conducted an inspection on a white tugboat heading towards Bintulu waters.
“Initial inspections revealed that the tugboat was operated by seven local crew members, aged between 35 and 50.
“The tugboat, along with its crew, was detained and escorted to the Vessel Detention Centre at the Bintulu Maritime Zone, and handed over to MMEA investigators for further action,” said Muhammad Suffian.
The MMEA, in a statement, reminded all maritime communities to comply with all laws when conducting any activities at sea.
