KUCHING (Jan 22): The Kuching Port Authority (KPA) held its appreciation and certificate presentation ceremony at its Port Operations Building in Pending Terminal today.
According to a statement, the event was meant to acknowledge 15 long-serving employees of KPA who retired in 2024, as well as to present Excellent Service Awards and certificates of completion of training programmes to KPA employees.
KPA’s new chairman Azizul Annuar Adenan, who is also Tanjong Datu assemblyman, officiated the event.
He took over the KPA chairmanship on Oct 22 last year from Dato Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah following his appointment as Dewan Negara President.
Awang Bemee had served in KPA since 1998.
In his opening address, Azizul emphasised the importance of human capital development.
“In 2024, KPA held a total of 241 internal and 157 external training programmes, including courses, seminars, webinars, talks, and workshops.
“As for cargo throughput, in 2024, KPA handled 10 million tonnes of cargo and a record 305,197 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) – an increase of 10 per cent from 2023,” he said.
Also present were KPA general manager Robert Lau Hong Thiam, KPA board members Datuk Dr Wahbi Junaidi, Dato Janang Bungsu, Liew Hui Chai, Lim Ah Ted and Datuk Ian James, who represented Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development permanent secretary Datu Chiew Chee Yau.
