KUCHING (Jan 22): An unemployed man was sentenced to 18 months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today for assaulting his wife.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan meted out the sentence against 35-year-old Mohd Shukri Hasli after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same Code.
The Section provides for an imprisonment term up to one year or a fine up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.
Mohd Shukri committed the offence at a house in Kampung Bako Tengah, Jalan Bako here at around 7.30pm on Jan 11.
Based on the facts of the case, Mohd Shukri and his 31-year-old wife had a misunderstanding, during which he reacted by repeatedly slapping her, pulling her hair and choking her.
The incident occurred because she did not answer his phone calls, as she did not hear her phone ring, and because she refused to give him money.
Mohd Shukri also accused his wife of being dropped off at home by another man after work.
As a result, his wife sustained bruises on her face, an eye injury, cuts on her lips, minor scratches on her neck, and body aches.
She managed to escape through the window to a neighbour’s house to save herself.
Unable to tolerate her husband’s hot-tempered behaviour any longer, the wife lodged a police report that led to Mohd Shukri’s arrest on the next day (Jan 12).
Mohd Shukri was not represented by a legal counsel.
