MIRI (March 9): Stern action will be taken against individuals and businesses caught dumping rubbish or household waste at illegal dump sites, said the Miri City Council (MCC).
Mayor Adam Yii said offenders those caught in the act by the council’s enforcement personnel will face a fine of RM1,000.
“If we catch them on the spot, we will issue a compound and they will have to pay the fine of RM1,000.
“MCC has also installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at some of these locations, and we will use footage from these cameras as evidence,” he told The Borneo Post today.
“Starting next week (today onwards), those caught dumping illegally will be issued a compound of RM1,000.”
Meanwhile, the council on its Facebook page announced that operations to nab illegal dumpers began last week, with its officers catching several individuals in the act of attempting to dispose waste at illegal dumping sites.
However, it said no compounds were issued then, with the offenders only given warnings.
MCC has faced criticism in recent months over the worsening issue of illegal dumping throughout the city.
Some residents have called for MCC to reinstate the roll-on roll-off (RoRo) bins to curb the problem, while others have suggested installing more CCTV cameras at these locations to catch irresponsible individuals and businesses disposing of waste illegally.
Yii urged Mirians to cooperate with the council by disposing of their rubbish in designated bins.
He also reminded the public that bulky waste such as furniture and household items should be disposed directly at the Kuala Baram landfill.
For those requiring transportation services to the landfill, the mayor said MCC offers such services at a minimal fee of RM25 per trip.
