SIBU (April 4): The Chinese national involved in the road accident that claimed the life of Sabah State Court director Marutin Pagan had his remand period extended today by a further three days.
Magistrate Romario Jonoi granted the application by police following the expiry of the 42-year-old man’s four-day remand period.
“The remand extension is necessary to facilitate investigations into the fatal accident,” said Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili in a statement.
In the March 30 collision at the Kanowit roundabout along Jalan Kanowit/Julau/Durin, Marutin was in a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by his 28-year-old daughter when they were struck by another SUV driven by the Chinese national.
Travelling with Marutin, 56, were his wife Merina Bandang and their two other daughters. The family was travelling from Kanowit to Sibu to visit his sick father in Machan.
The collision caused their SUV to overturn, with Marutin thrown out of the vehicle. He sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife and daughters suffered minor injuries and were treated at Kanowit Hospital.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
