KUCHING (May 10): The Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) will implement geo-fencing measures at Bintulu and Miri airports, starting this July 1.
According to the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong, all e-hailing operators have agreed to the policy and pledged to play their part in improving traffic flow as well as better regulating pick-up and drop-off activities at the airports.
“Their cooperation will help to ease congestion around the airports, creating a smoother and safer environment for all passengers and users,” he said this in a statement issued following a meeting with MAHB and representatives from all major e-hailing operators, which focused on the implementation of the geo-fencing measures at Kuching International Airport and Sibu Airport effective this month.
Furthermore, Kong also took the opportunity to raise the issue of indiscriminate parking at the airports.
“We understand that people need to send off or pick up their loved ones, but they should not leave their vehicles unattended for an extended period of time.”
Kong slammed such irresponsible behaviour as it severely disrupted traffic flow and caused unnecessary inconvenience to everyone.
In this regard, MAHB had assured to look into this matter seriously, while the state Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would conduct more frequent and random enforcement checks at the airport premises to deter such practices.
“While we appreciate the public’s need for convenience, it is crucial that everyone plays their part in ensuring that airport facilities are accessible, orderly, and efficient.”
Adding on, Kong gave assurance that CVLB Sarawak would continue to monitor the situation closely and work with all stakeholders to improve traffic management at the airports statewide.
