MIRI (Oct 9): Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has called on the federal government to approve the upgrading project for the Sungai Tujoh Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex under the upcoming Budget 2026.
Chiew, who recently conducted a working visit to the ICQS and the General Operations Force (PGA) base at the Sarawak–Brunei border, said the upgrade was crucial to improve efficiency, strengthen border security, and support Miri’s growing role as a key international gateway.
He said the visit aimed to assess the current condition of the border complex, discuss operational and technical challenges, and gather direct feedback from enforcement agencies including immigration and the PGA.
“Sungai Tujoh ICQS is the main border checkpoint linking Sarawak with Brunei Darussalam, with tens of thousands of people crossing weekly for work, business, tourism and family purposes.
“The smooth operation of this complex directly affects the daily lives of Mirians and the local economy,” he said in a statement today.
Chiew said among the key issues raised during his discussions with the authorities were the need to improve facilities, enhance technological systems, reduce congestion during peak hours, and ensure the welfare of frontliners is prioritised.
He also commended the dedication of PGA personnel stationed at the border, saying their commitment and sacrifices in safeguarding national security deserved greater support through better logistics and facilities.
“I have raised issues related to ICQS operations and border security many times in Parliament because they have a significant impact on the people of Miri and our social and economic relations with Brunei.
“As an international entry point, the Sungai Tujoh ICQS must be maintained at a high standard consistent with its strategic importance,” he stressed.
Chiew said he would continue to advocate for federal allocation to upgrade the ICQS infrastructure and also push for more staffing, particularly for Immigration and Customs officers, to ensure smoother clearance processes.
“With cooperation among all agencies, adequate investment in infrastructure and careful planning, Sungai Tujoh ICQS can evolve into a modern border complex that not only functions efficiently but also symbolises Miri’s progress, security and openness to the world,” he added.
