MIRI (Oct 29): The inaugural Malaysia Marine, Offshore and Gas and Offshore Expo (Mimox) 2025 has positioned Sarawak on track to become the region’s next major marine and offshore hub.
The two-day event drew over 100 exhibiting brands from around the world here, including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Showcasing cutting-edge technologies in shipbuilding, offshore engineering, marine logistics, digitalisation, and energy sustainability, the strong turnout was hailed by Deputy Premier and State Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan as a sign of confidence in the state’s strategic position.
“Miri is the birth place of Malaysia’s oil and gas industry which started in 1910. Today it stands as one of East Malaysia’s most dynamic marine and offshore centres,” he said, in a speech delivered by State Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh.
Awang Tengah underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening the sector, citing an RM200 million investment in a new Sea Surveillance Radar system to be installed in Miri, Bintulu, and Kuching to enhance maritime security for safer offshore operations.
Central to Sarawak’s strategy is its 10-year Gas Roadmap, which has established strategic gas hubs in Kuching, Bintulu, Samalaju, and Miri.
Supported by new infrastructure, the plan aims to maximise the state’s gas resources and attract major investments, creating new opportunities across the oil and gas value chain — particularly in LNG production, gas processing, marine logistics, fabrication, and offshore engineering.
He said the state’s O&G sector, a cornerstone of its GDP and a major employer, is now evolving to embrace sustainability, digitalisation, and cleaner energy.
The marine and offshore industries are expanding their role in building a “blue economy”, linking marine resources with renewable energy and sustainable ventures.
Awang Tengah stressed that as the energy landscape transitions toward a greener and more tech-driven future, events like Mimox are vital for fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and investment.
He urged participants to seize the opportunity to exchange ideas and forge partnerships to strengthen Malaysia’s competitiveness in these critical sectors.
