KUCHING (May 24): A total of RM5 million has been allocated by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development to implement welfare programmes for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PwD) nationwide this year.
Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the allocation supports, among others, the implementation of the ‘Rhythm-Ritma Kehidupan Harmoni’ programme, which she officiated at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka here.
She said the programme aims to reach 6,500 participants through 133 Healthy Ageing initiatives, 133 PwD therapy sessions, and six caregiving seminar series.
“The programme covers Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, and is designed to enhance the wellbeing of target groups through health-focused, therapeutic and sustainable community development approaches.
“In today’s increasingly challenging environment, we need more programmes that bring communities together through healthy, creative and constructive approaches,” she said.
Nancy added that community-based initiatives such as the ‘Rhythm-Ritma Kehidupan Harmoni’ programme also provide a platform for meaningful social interaction while encouraging mutual support among participants.
“At the same time, such activities help foster a more positive environment and contribute to emotional wellbeing,” she added.
The programme featured activities such as dancing, singing and light exercise as part of efforts to promote healthier lifestyles. Nancy said such approaches can also help participants cope with emotional stress while building stronger and more positive social relationships.
The programme also saw the involvement of various agencies, children, students and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), she said.
“The participation of youth and NGOs is important in instilling values of unity and harmony between younger and older generations,” she added.
Also present were Sarawak Social Welfare Department director Semawi Mohamad; National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) Sarawak director Jimbau Munggat; Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development chief assistant secretary Rohana Mohamad Ali; and other distinguished guests.
