SIBU (June 27): The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) has confirmed that no pig carcasses were found at the reported location near the Salim Water Pumping Station, but did not rule out the possibility that they had drifted downstream or been removed before its inspection team arrived.
In a statement, SRDC said it took the matter seriously following public concern over the alleged discovery of pig carcasses and immediately dispatched officers to inspect the site.
“Upon receiving the complaint, SRDC officers immediately conducted a site inspection together with the community leader. However, no pig carcass was found at the reported location during the inspection.
“It is believed that the carcass may have drifted downstream with the current or had already been removed before the team arrived,” said the council.
It said the matter has been referred to the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) for further investigation.
“SRDC’s role is to ensure that any animal carcass found within its jurisdiction and in public places is properly collected and disposed of in accordance with relevant public health and environmental regulations.
“The council will continue to work closely with the DVS and other relevant agencies to ensure appropriate action is taken,” SRDC said.
The council also urged the public to dispose of animal carcasses responsibly and refrain from illegal dumping, warning that such acts could pollute the environment, pose public health risks, and affect water resources.
“The council appreciates the vigilance and cooperation of the public in reporting such incidents and remains committed to protecting public health, preserving the environment, and ensuring the cleanliness of public areas,” it said.
Yesterday, a resident raised concerns after several pig carcasses were allegedly spotted in a river near the Salim-Stabau area, close to a water pumping station, prompting calls for the relevant authorities to take immediate action.
