KUCHING (July 16): Sarawak is building a strong foundation for a more prosperous future by investing in its young people, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
The state Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister emphasised that the success of Sarawak nation-building project hinges on quality education and ongoing talent development.
“The Sarawak government places great emphasis on education and talent development. In the past, some students may have faced financial constraints that limited their opportunities to pursue higher education.
“Today, the government provides a wide range of educational assistance, including the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme, scholarships, free laptops and living allowances.
“All these ensure that financial limitations are no longer a barrier to pursuing academic aspirations,” he said when launching a two-day Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2026 Free Readiness Workshop recently.
A total of 600 students, mostly from three secondary schools in the Batu Kawah constituency — SM Min Lit Batu Kawa, SMK Batu Kawa and SMK Jalan Arang — took part in the workshop held at the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multi‑purpose Hall in Batu Kawa.
The workshop equipped participants with effective study techniques and examination strategies, with expert teachers providing guidance on key aspects of exam preparation.
Dr Sim, who is Batu Kawah assemblyman, expressed delight that the workshop was successfully organised and extended his appreciation to the principals, teachers and parents for their cooperation and support.
Pointing out that SPM examination is one of Malaysia’s most important academic qualifications, he said it plays a crucial role in determining students’ future pathways in higher education and employment.
He thus encouraged all candidates to remain focused and strive for excellent results.
Dr Sim also noted that Sarawakian students have consistently performed well in the SPM examinations over the years, including many excellent students from the Batu Kawa area.
