MIRI (July 21): A team of licensed crocodile hunters captured three crocodiles measuring between six and 13 feet in Senadin area on Monday night, following public complaint of crocodile sightings.
The team, which goes with handle ‘Eric Cat’, said in a Facebook post that after an extended search in the area and with the assistance of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), they managed to catch the reptiles at a lake which surrounded by residential houses.
“After this, the safety risk around this area including rivers and lake, will reduce significantly,” it said.
Describing the operation to capture large and often highly aggresive crocodiles, the team said the 12-member group chose to conduct the operation at night, with each stage testing their experience, coordination and professional skills.
It explained that the 13-foot crocodile was not a small specimen, and the capture had to be strictly follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by SFC.
“We would like to thank SFC for providing cooperation and support to ensure the operation was carried out safely and successfully,” it said.
The team revealed that they were alerted by a local child who frequently fished at the lake area and had spotted the reptiles.
They also reminded the public that although the crocodiles have been removed, riverbanks, mangrove areas and waterways where crocodile activity has been recorded may still pose risks.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant and not attempt to approach, chase away or capture crocodiles on their own,” the team said, adding that any sightings should be immediately reported to relevant authorities to ensure public safety.
Previously, in June, the team carried our crocodile-catching operation in Marudi and successfully captured several large crocodiles.
