Representatives of the project implementing agency conduct the site handover process to the contractors involved in the projects.
SIBU (Aug 23): Quality and compliance with work standards must be prioritised in every public project to ensure the facilities developed provide long-term benefits to the community, said Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.
He said projects funded with public allocations must be implemented responsibly, rather than focusing solely on meeting completion deadlines.
“Aspects such as technical specifications, the quality of construction materials, workmanship and compliance with established standards must be given attention throughout the implementation period.
“When we implement projects for the people, the most important thing is to ensure that the work is carried out properly and according to the required standards.
“We do not want projects to be completed only on paper, while their quality falls short of the expected level.
“Every allocation provided must be translated into quality facilities that can be used by the community for a long period,” he said when commenting on the implementation of two projects to upgrade places of worship under the Mosque and Surau Project for the Sarikei parliamentary constituency, involving Masjid Al Muhajirin in Taman Bintang and Surau Asy-Syakirin in Skim B, Meradong, on Friday.
Huang said the site handover to the contractors was carried out together with State Development Office officer Nina Azirina to ensure both projects could commence according to the approved scope and plans.
He said the contractors must ensure all work was carried out properly and in compliance with the agreed specifications and completion schedule.
“Our priority is quality. If the work is carried out according to the standards, the completed facilities will not only look good when they are newly completed, but will also be more durable and safe for the community to use.
“This is important because public projects involve public funds. Therefore, we have a responsibility to ensure that every ringgit spent provides returns in the form of quality facilities,” he said.
Huang also stressed that monitoring and cooperation among all parties were essential to ensure any issues arising during implementation could be identified and resolved promptly.
He said the mosque and surau management, implementing agencies, contractors and local community must each play their respective roles to ensure the projects proceeded smoothly.
“Do not compromise on quality. We want the projects to be completed according to schedule, but at the same time, work standards must be maintained.
“The ultimate goal is to ensure that the community receives facilities that are safe, comfortable, of good quality and capable of being used for a long period,” he added.
