KOTA KINABALU (Sept 22): The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) is stepping up enforcement to ensure electrical equipment and gas appliances sold in the state meet prescribed safety standards and legal requirements.
ECoS said an operation on Sept 17 found four premises here suspected of selling electrical equipment and gas appliances without approved safety labels or markings.
The integrated operation involved 22 ECoS officers and four officers from Sirim.
“Checks found various products without the required safety labels or markings.
“Items seized included light bulbs, electrical cables, electric kettles, electric irons, and gas cookers,” ECoS said in a statement.
Under Regulation 107 of the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024 (ESR 2024), regulated electrical equipment must obtain approval and bear the safety label or marking prescribed by ECoS before it can be sold.
Failure to comply is an offence under Regulation 134 of the ESR 2024.
Upon conviction, offenders may be fined up to RM20,000, jailed for up to two years, or both.
For gas appliances, Regulation 117 of the Gas Supply Regulations 2023 (GSR 2023) requires every approved gas appliance to carry the prescribed safety marking or label before being sold.
Failure to meet the requirement is an offence under Section 62(2) of the Gas Supply Enactment 2023 (GSE 2023), with offenders liable to a fine of up to RM500,000 upon conviction. Additional fines may also be imposed for offences that continue after conviction.
ECoS urged traders, suppliers, importers, and distributors to ensure all electrical equipment and gas appliances placed on the market fully comply with safety and legal requirements.
Consumers are also advised to check that electrical and gas products carry valid safety labels or markings before making a purchase.
ECoS added it would continue monitoring the market and carrying out enforcement operations to ensure products sold in Sabah are safe for use and to protect consumers’ safety and interests.
