KUCHING (May 16): See Chee How (IND-Batu Lintang) said Sarawak’s push towards renewable energy, free education and social assistance had placed the state on a path that was once considered ‘an unimaginable future’.
Debating on the motion of appreciation for the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri’s address at DUN sitting on Friday, See said current global conflicts and energy volatility had reinforced the significance of Sarawak’s long-term development direction.
He said wars and tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine had exposed the vulnerabilities of countries heavily dependent on fossil fuels, resulting in soaring oil and gas prices, supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures worldwide.
“Renewable and sustainable energy production are therefore no longer just about carbon emissions or climate targets, but are now seen as crucial for a country’s resilience, sovereignty, independence and defence.
“It is our security and survival,” he said.
He later credited the Sarawak government under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for recognising the importance of energy transition early through policies such as the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER) 2025.
See said the initiatives positioned Sarawak as a regional renewable energy powerhouse targeting a 60 per cent renewable energy capacity mix by 2030 through hydropower, solar and green hydrogen.
“What Sarawak is today, what Sarawak is undergoing, what Sarawakians are experiencing, what Sarawakians are enjoying – I can only say that the present moment of Sarawak is an unimaginable future,” he said.
