KUALA LUMPUR: The crime index in the country for the first four months of this year shows a drop as a result of initiatives under the National Key Result Areas (NKRA).Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop said the crime index dropped by 15.35 per cent and street crimes by 38.7 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year.

According to statistics, he said, 59,661 crime cases were reported between January and April this year, from 70,481 cases during the same period last year.

For street crimes, the number of cases reported was 8,209 from 12,391 cases last year, he added.

He said this in response to a question by Senator Datuk Abdul Rahman Bakar who wanted to know about the effectiveness of the Rakan Cop programme in reducing crime rate in the country.

Abu Seman said that a total of 336,363 people had registered as Rakan Cop members nationwide since the programme was introduced in 2004.

He said that since the programme was introduced, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had received 1.7 million information relating to crime and public order through the short messaging service.

“Rakan Cop is one of the initiatives under the NKRA to reduce crime rate by five per cent and 20 per cent for street crime by 2010,” he added. — Bernama
