MIRI: A driver cheated death after the front portion of his lorry exploded minutes after he had stopped at the roadside, about 25Km from Batu Niah yesterday.

IN FLAMES: Firemen putting out the fire.

The 47-year-old driver jumped from his seat before the lorry exploded and burst into flames.

He escaped without injuries but was in shock when met at the scene yesterday.

The lorry was ferrying chicken dung from Bintulu and heading towards Miri when the incident occurred at about 9am.

According to sources, the driver had felt something amiss with one of the lorry’s tyres and  stopped by the roadside to check.

The impact of the explosion transported the lorry to the middle of the road.

Batu Niah voluntary firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after and put out the fire.

Five firemen from Miri Fire Station also rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call from a passer-by.
