Council to gather one million signatures

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Youth Council (MYC) plans to gather one million signatures from youths to express opposition to the illegal assembly planned for July 9 here and in Sabah and Sarawak.

Its president, Mohamed Maliki Mohamed Rapiee, said the signatures would be handed over to the organiser of the assembly to demonstrate that the gathering went against the wishes of the people.

“We will gather the signatures immediately. MYC represents more than 3.9 million youths registered with more than 7,000 youth organisations nationwide.

“The signatures will be handed over to the organiser (of the assembly) seeking the cancellation of the gathering.

“Yesterday, we sent a letter to the organiser stating our stand,” he told reporters at his office here.

Mohamed Maliki said that besides gathering the signatures, MYC would also obtain feedback from the owners and operators of outlets in the vicinity of the planned assembly.

“The MYC has observed that street demonstrations are not held in an orderly manner.

“They bring hardship in many ways, such as damage to property, loss of business and bad traffic congestion, and strike fear in tourists.”

Mohamed Maliki urged the police to take appropriate action against those participating in the illegal assembly, including those who might be from MYC.
