KUCHING: Minister in the Chief Minister Department Datin Fatimah Abdullah agreed with a recent statement made by Deputy Minister of Education Dr Mohd Puad that the ministry (MOE) was committed to its decision to abolish teaching Mathematics and Science in English (PPSMI).

“I always believe that educational matters like curriculum, syllabus, and pedagogical matters should best be left to the professionals,” said Fatimah to The Borneo Post yesterday.

She added: “Their decision should be strictly professional in nature and based on past literature and present research and context”.

Sarawak Bumiputra Teachers Union (KGBS) president Ahmad Malie
also supported the
decision and he hoped that MOE would stand by its decision to show that it (decision) was not made in haste.

“MOE’s decision was based on comprehensive studies and discussions involving various parties,” said Malie.

KGBS, he added, viewed MOE’s judgement as accurate and did not warrant disputes from any party.

He urged the public to give MOE an opportunity to stabilise and strengthen the teaching of Bahasa Malaysia and English (MBMMBI) policy.

Malie said he was optimistic that the public would encourage MOE to improve English proficiency among students.
