Sibu Jaya market ‘needs more trading bays but land limited’

SIBU: Plans to expand the Sibu Jaya market place may take some time to materialise due to space constraints, said Sibu Rural District Council’s Business Licensing Standing Committee chairman Michael Tiang.

He told reporters yesterday that the market was in pressing need of expansion to better cater to the increasing population of the township.

He said the market place was bustling with life and this gave the council a challenge to improve the area, including the provision of trading bays to accommodate new traders.

“However the market expansion plan may take some time to materialise because we are also facing limitation of land size,” he reiterated.

The market building takes up one acre near a petrol station in Sibu Jaya commercial centre. It houses a food court, wet market section, night market and a tamu.

The food court has 16 stalls, wet market section has 59 stalls, night market 32 stalls and the tamu 60 lots.

Tiang said the council had in hand many requests for permits to trade there.

Meanwhile, on the Ramadan Bazaar in Sibu Jaya, he said those interested to sell there may still apply for a permit.

Application forms are available at the Public Health Section of SRDC at Level 17, Wisma Sanyan. Closing date is July 6.
