KAPIT: Longhouse folk have been called on to take extra precautions to prevent the transmission of leptospirosis.

Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament Wilson Ugak Kumbong advised longhouse folk to always wash thoroughly after farming and coming into contact with soil.

He also advised them to wear boots for safety whenever going into the forest.

“Apart from that keep the compound clean and refrain from unhealthy activities to help provide a conducive and healthy living environment,” he said when launching a health campaign at Rumah Saong, Sg Oyan, Mujong River over the weekend.

Leptospirosis is among the world’s most common bacterial diseases transmitted to humans from animals such as rats.

“Health is wealth,” Ugak said calling on longhouse folk who attended the campaign to treasure and look after their health with great care.

The campaign was organised by the Kapit Divisional Health Department in collaboration with Klinik Desa Nanga Oyan.

Ugak also announced a grant totalling RM10,500 — RM5,400 for this year and RM5,100 for next year — for the Rumah Saong village security and development committee (JKKK).
