KAPIT: Kapit Chiang Chuan Association Women’s wing secretary Chua Bee Hung has been selected as this year’s Kapit District Tokoh Wanita.

She received her award from Minister of Land Development Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing during the recent district-level Women’s Day celebration.

“Women nowadays play a much bigger and important role compared to women of yesteryear in nation building, when life is more and more challenging as a result of globalisation,” he said.

“The role played by women shouldn’t be underestimated as the saying goes ‘the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world’. It tells of the very important and influential role of women in the family, society and the country.”

Masing said in Kapit, women, through their strong spirit of volunteerism, have played very significant roles in improving the community’s well-being.

He also announced a government grant of RM10,000 for the Kapit District Women’s Day celebration committee’s programmes.

This year’s state celebration is themed ‘Caring Hearts, Touching Lives’.

Kapit District Officer Elvis Didit said the theme recognises the contributions and sacrifices of women volunteers.

“No one can deny the role and involvement of women in volunteerism activities both at the national, state, or at the district level. In fact, their role is not limited to the activities of volunteerism in the country but across national boundaries regardless of skin colour or religious beliefs,” he said.

He urged all women’s non-governmental organisations to enhance existing efforts for smart collaborations in areas such as health, welfare, as well as addressing issues of violence and exploitation.
