BINTULU: More than 90 participants are expected to take part in the 51km ‘Fun Ride to Ulu Sebauh’ this Saturday.

The event, scheduled for flag-off at 6.45am, will also see Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications) and Kemena assemblyman Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi together with his wife Datin Sri Lorita Rundi joining other cyclists at Bintulu Esplanade.

The organisers urged more women to join the programme, saying that so far they have confirmed only six female cyclists participating.

The route will begin at Bintulu Esplanade and end at Rumah Meikle Ding, passing Keppel Road, Sebiew Road, Bintulu/Sibu Road and Ulu Sebauh Road along the way.

“There will be six pit-stops throughout the course. We expect all cyclists to reach Rumah Meikle Ding around 11am,” said the organisers, which comprise Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Bintulu Development Authority, Laku Management Sdn Bhd Bintulu, Tanjung Batu Cycling Club and Jepak Cycling Club.

“We advise all participants to come early before the flag-off on Jan 10, as there will be free T-shirts to be given away,” the organisers reminded, adding that registration would be open till Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Dr Rundi, when met at the official launch of ‘Jom Kayuh Untuk Kesihatan’ programme here Sunday, hoped the ‘Fun Ride to Ulu Sebauh’ event would create greater awareness among the public of the importance of healthy lifestyle through cycling.

“Cycling is a good activity and it is so popular in the Western countries.

“If the response is good, we would organise it again in the future,” he said, adding that for safety reason, 31 marshals would be assigned at the Saturday event to guide participants.

Dr Rundi also highlighted the event as the first for this town in the new year.
