All eyes on Jimmy the ‘chief’ Hornbill.
MIRI: The 19th edition of the Hornbill Walk held yesterday continues to attract many nature and wildlife enthusiasts, including some from neighbouring country Brunei.
Three members of the Wildlife and Nature Photography Club in Brunei were among about 100 people who took part in the walk held at the Piasau Nature Reserve (PNR), formerly called Piasau Camp.
Among the notables present were the chairman of the Piasau Camp Miri Nature Park Society (PCMNPS) Datuk Sebastian
Ting and his exco members – Andy Chia (secretary), Karambir Singh (treasurer), members of
the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Miri Chapter and other active advocators of the PNR, including Datin Judy Wan Morshidi.
The walk which was first started in 2012 was coordinated by PCMNPS and MNS.
Initially to drum up public support to urge the government to set up the PNR for the historic Piasau Camp (for which the government has consented) had now become a favourite avenue
for naturalists to pursue their interest in watching wildlife including hornbills, besides promoting a healthy walking lifestyle.
Those coming for the walk yesterday were delighted as the iconic papa hornbill called ‘Jimmy’ was at the nestling area, guarding his partner Juliet, who recently bore their first two babies.
Admission is free to the monthly Hornbill Walk held on every third Saturday of the month. The next walk will be on Feb 14 at 4pm. All are welcome to take part.
