SIBU: Students of SM Wong Nai Siong were reminded of the dangers of drugs through a Charis Youth anti-drugs performance yesterday morning.

It was organised by University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu and Charis Youth Centre.

Speaking before the performance, UCTS general manager (administrative and finance), Rabuan Mantine pointed out that drug abuse ran contrary to education, and could imprison one’s life.

“Once you are hooked on drugs, you will feel that you are very strong, but the truth is, you are very vulnerable. You just feel strong. So, once you take drugs, you cannot perform well academically,” he pointed out.

On UCTS, he said it belonged to all Sarawakians, and catered to the state’s need of more manpower.

He also mentioned that UCTS acknowledged the contribution of the Chinese to the development of Sibu.

SM Wong Nai Siong principal Lu Yew Hiuung, said schools, the media and parents played an important role in educating students about the dangers of addiction to drugs.

He said drugs cases were increasing every year, especially among youths despite many steps been taken by the government to tackle the menace.

“Youths might take drugs out of curiosity or because of peer pressure or maybe they are having difficulties in their lives,” he said.

He pointed out that drugs would affect their future and health and would also lead to problems in society.

Also present at the event was UCA president Ting Huat Chie.
