KANOWIT: The 1Malaysia Internet Centre (Pi1M) at Nanga Tada resettlement scheme here was adjudged the ‘Best Performance Pi1M 2015’ by Nusuara Technologies Sdn Bhd recently.
Pi1M Nanga Tada manager Barbara John Perry said the award was the first of its kind received by the centre which started its operations on March 26, 2013.
The centre was set up under Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) project with Nusuara Technologies to narrow the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
“Pi1M Nanga Tada emerged champion from a total of 105 Pi1M nationwide taking part in the competition.
“The award was presented by Nusuara Technologies chief executive officer Datuk Ramli Abbas in a ceremony held
at Nexus Karambunai in Sabah,” she said when contacted yesterday.
She said Pi1M Nanga Tada won the award based on its Key Performance Index (KPI) achievement.
To achieve the KPI, she explained each Pi1M must fulfil 48 hours of information and communication technology (ICT) classes per month and a minimum of 24 activities per year.
At the moment the centre has 227 members and more than 2,000 WiFi users, she added.
“Since 2013, some 200 young and old of the local community have enrolled for the ICT class held free of charge.
“We teach them basic computer skills such as how to use Microsoft Word, E-Learning and online entrepreneurship,” she said.
Barbara said other than Internet surfing, other services available at the Pi1M included leasing of 1Malaysia Netbook to be used at the centre, study space for students, photocopying, laminating and free ICT tuition class.
Among its many activities, she said the centre also educates the local community on Internet safety awareness through ‘Klik Dengan Bijak’ programme.
The Pi1M is opened daily from 9am to 6pm except on public holidays.
For Internet surfing service at the centre, members are charged RM1 per hour while non-members are charged RM2 per hour.
