SAMARAHAN: Two Sarawak Sukma golfers Aziel Teo and Steven Hii have qualified for the grand final of the Sukma XVIII 2016 Sarawak Golf Challenge that will be played at Kelab Golf Sarawak on July 14.

They finished among the top eight golfers in Category A competition at the Samarahan Country Club (SCC) here yesterday.

Aziel, a 3-handicapper, carded a gross score of 81 in the one-day competition to finish in seventh place while Steven, a 4-handicapper, returned a similar score of 81 to book the last ticket to the final.

The event was won by Mohammad Lokman Mustaffa who returned a one-under 71, with James Wong in second place four strokes further back.

Young Bernard Yeo was third on countback (75) and Waili Abang (77) and Capt (rtd) Norazle Idris (78) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Johari Aman took sixth place after losing to Norazle on OCB.

The ninth and tenth finishers were Hamzah  (83) and Azzizul Annuar (85) respectively.

Meanwhile, Wan Amin won the Category B when he registered a gross score of 78.

Magit Semong beat Giannano Foo into third spot on OCB after both returned similar scores of 79 and the fourth and fifth placings were also decided by OCB, with Abang Shamsuddin finishing ahead of Jamit Imbak.

Both had identical scores of 81.

The three other qualifiers for the grand final were Ally Zulkernain (82), Zayadi Sebeli (83 OCB), Terence Chai (83) while Ernest John and Adzwa finished in ninth and tenth spots respectively also on 83.

There were no rare feats for the three hole-in-one prizes on offer. They are a Perodua Myvi car worth RM54,000 sponsored by Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd for the feat at Hole 15, a three-day two-night trip to Bangkok, Thailand inclusive of air fare sponsored by MAL Travel at Hole 3 and golf apparel worth RM5,000 sponsored by Crestlink at Hole 5.

Deputy state secretary Datu Misnu Taha and permanent secretary to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Solidarity Kameri Affendi gave away the prizes.

Kuching was the sixth and final leg of the Sukma XVIII 2016 Sarawak Golf Challenge qualifying – after Damaipuri GCC, Kedah on May 17, Tiara Melaka GCC on May 19, Resort World Hijau, Terengganu on May 21, SAAS GCC, Selangor on May 25 and Sabah Borneo GCC, Sabah on May 26.

A total of 92 golfers from all states in Malaysia including 36 from Sabah and Sarawak will be vying for top honours in the final showdown at KGS next month.
