KUCHING: An elderly woman survived after she was attacked by a bear at a site, about 11km from Kampung Batu Lintang in Sri Aman, on Saturday.

It is said that the 63-year-old was with three other fellow hunters – all men – went into the jungle near the village to hunt for game animals.

“As we enter the woods, we went our separate ways. Not long after that, I heard a scream.

“I ran to the direction where the scream came from and saw her lying on the ground, bloody and all,” said a member of the hunting party, adding that the elderly woman defended herself against the attack by using her ‘parang’ (machete).

“She told us that she managed to strike the bear twice before it ran away into the jungle.”

The victim is currently undergoing treatment for her injuries at Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching.
