Over 200 in KBA Age Group Competition

KUCHING: More than 200 students aged between nine and 17 took to the Dewan Stapok Badminton courts to compete in the 2nd Kuching Badminton Association (KBA) Age Group Competition from Dec 18 to 20.

KBA head coach Johnny Ng said there were a few Under-13 girls and Under-9 boys/girls who have proven that they can excel and given time and more training, will be a force to be reckoned with in higher level tournaments in the future. He added that there are plans to organise at least two more competitions next year.

Ng thanked the Sarawak Sports Corporation and Badminton World Sports Equipment Shop for their support in sponsorships.

KBA vice president Shaifulbahri Shukri and Johnny Ng gave away the certificates and prizes to the winners.

Chen Chun Wei lifted the Boys Under-17 singles title after he beat Yii Zhi Yong in straight sets of 21-19, 21-16 in the final.

Zhi Yong made up for his disappointment in the singles when he partnered Kenny Liew to win the Boys Under-17 doubles title.

The Boys Under-15 singles title was won by Joshua Voon who tamed Chen Zi Quan 18-21, 21-13, 21-17 while Jeremy Juan outlasted Ismail Hafizin Ibrahim 19-21, 21-15, 21-12 for the Boys Under-13 singles crown.

Jeremy completed a double after he partnered Darren Lim in the Boys Under-13 doubles final to defeat Brandon Goh-Ashley Chua 21-14, 21-15.

The Girls Under-15 singles was won by Karin Sophia Ng while Audrey also bagged two prizes for winning the Girls Under-13 singles and Girls Under-13 doubles with Brenda Lai.
