SIBU: Leaves of rubber tree like tapioca leaves are edible, but only when they are young and soft, according to jungle produce vendor Genin Gang

“Rubber tree leaves are cooked the same way as tapioca leaves,” she added.

She has been selling these leaves at the Pasar Tamu in Sibu Jaya for the last five years.

She gave the pointers on how to cook these leaves- rinse the green soft young rubber tree leaves and drain well.

Then, place the leaves in a mortar and pound to a medium or fine consistency.

“Place the pounded green soft young rubber tree leaves into a saucepan. Cover it with some water, season with salt and boil it at medium heat until soft and no longer chewy. Add water when necessary. The cooked leaves are best consumed with rice,” she added.

Genin who hails from Kapit is now staying at Sibu Jaya with her family, gets her supply from a nearby forest.
