KUALA LUMPUR: Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop is scheduled to make a three-day visit to Malaysia beginning today.

A Wisma Putra statement said yesterday the purpose of the visit was to strengthen relations with the new government and ensure the continuity of the existing bilateral relations.

Bishop is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and meet with Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu and Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, it said.

It also said that Bishop was also scheduled to visit Monash University Malaysia in Bandar Sunway on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the campus in Malaysia.

The statement said Bishop’s visit would provide opportunities for Australia and Malaysia to explore as well as strengthen existing relations under the strategic partnership arrangement in various fields including trade and investment, education, tourism, defence and people-to-people relations. — Bernama
