KUALA LUMPUR: The former Director-General of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO) Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid wants the police to investigate the mastermind who leaked the content of a letter that she wrote to the United States (US) Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on May 4.

Hasanah said the contents of the letter were nothing unusual and certainly not a letter that could be described as a form of treason because the mandate of the MEIO was to protect national security.

She said the contents of the letter were intelligence secrets which could not be turned into elements of public polemics.

“The action of the irresponsible group had destroyed the confidence of foreign intelligence agencies on the MEIO and Malaysia’s ties with the foreign countries. If such leaks happened at random then important resources would be depleted and the confidence on the strength of confidentiality held by the MEIO will evaporate,” she said in a statement issued through her lawyer, Datuk Shaharudin Ali shortly after a police report was lodged at the Travers Police Station here yesterday.

The letter dated May 4 was addressed to CIA director Gina Haspel, which among others had asked the United States to support then prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak administration if the Barisan Nasional were to win the general election last May even with a simple majority or with a majority of only one seat. — Bernama
