KUCHING: Sarawak’s older generation has a responsibility and vital role to play in promoting the culture of mutual respect and neighbourliness to the younger generation, says Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

He also said that Sarawakians should be proud of what they have enjoyed together despite their different cultures, languages, social background and religions.

Dr Abdul Rahman who is Pantai Damai assemblyman pointed this out when officiating at the Pantai Damai Chinese New Year celebration event held at Bandar Baru Samariang on Friday.

“The foundation of Sarawak’s progress can be attributed to the mutual respect among Sarawakians towards one another. We must make sure it stays that way,” he added.

Dr Abdul Rahman said that the annual event was held for the sixth time at Bandar Baru Samariang which has about 200 residents from the Chinese community.

“The Chinese New Year celebration is for all residents in Bandar Baru Samariang regardless of their racial or religious background.

“I am glad that the people of Bandar Baru Samariang have always done things together. Each community supports each other during their respective celebration which is a good sign of Sarawakian unity,” he said.

During the event, Dr Abdul Rahman also pledged to give allocation to buy a pair of red lion costume for the Pantai Damai constituency level Chinese New Year celebration event for next year.

He also presented welfare contributions to 30 residents including the disabled, elderly and underserved.

Also present were Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bandar Baru Samariang unit head Azmi Abdul Rani and Bandar Baru Samaring Housing Estate Chinese Association chairman Robert Lee.
