MIRI: An 18-year-old straight-A Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidate has received a grant of RM2,000 to assist with the cost of continuing his studies at Labuan Matriculation College.

Daniel Kueh, who was raised by a single mother, received the grant from Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin yesterday.

“I am not from a well to do family. My mother raised me and my two other siblings by working two jobs. Therefore, this financial aid from Datuk Lee really means a lot to me and my family,” he said.

“When we do well in our studies, we will be able to help our mother take care of the family and this will also ensure a brighter future for us.”

The youngest of three siblings said his mother Yong Siew Fong, 53, worked very hard to ensure they could further their studies.

“My sister, who is the eldest, is currently studying in Unimas (Universiti Malaysia Sarawak), while my brother has just finished his Form 6 and is currently waiting for offers from UPU (University Admissions Unit),” he said.

Kueh added his favourite subjects are science, physics, biology, and mathematics.

He plans to study medicine after completing his matriculation.
