MIRI: Rodents and flash floods are some of the issues faced by the residents in Piasau housing estate that needed immediate attention by the Miri City Council (MCC), said Kelvin Hii, who is the special assistant to Miri Mayor Adam Yii.

He noted that this was an effort to eradicate rodents and flash floods in the Piasau area.

Hii had recently inspected the housing area and revealed that the old drain system was causing a lot of issues, particularly health hazards to the residents here.

“In one of the area that I have inspected, which is Jalan Mimulus 1 at Piasau Lorong 8, residents had shown me the parts where rats were hiding. The soil in the drain concrete had slowly eroded over the years and when it became empty, it become an ideal breeding ground for the rodents.

“The shallow depth of the drain isn’t working ideally too. Whenever there is heavy rain, the water will be overflow, causing flash flood,” Hii said today.

He added that the flash flood issue was one of the main concerns among the residents, as it could lead to other health problems such as dengue fever.

Hii revealed that his duty as special officer to Mayor Adam Yii was to go to the ground, gather complaints, understand the situation and report back to Yii and the council’s engineering department for further action.

“Tentatively, any repair work will be carry out by the city council in phases. The details will be officially announced by the city council soon,” said Hii.
