“The front of the car was badly damaged by the falling object. Fortunately, the victims were safe from any injury.

“Work at the site was instructed to stop immediately by JKR (Public Works Department) Sarawak after the incident. The damaged car and any obstruction have been shifted away from site,” said the ministry.

The ministry said JKR Sarawak will conduct a thorough investigation to identify the root cause of the incident and produce a comprehensive report to be submitted to the ministry.

In the incident, a huge piece of tubular metal used to restrain a barge working on the maintenance of a fender project accidentally fell onto the ferry, hitting and damaging a disembarking car, wrecking the bonnet.

“Immediately upon hearing the incident, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Julaihi Narawi rushed to the scene to get first hand information from JKR officers, the ferry operator, as well as the contractor responsible for the construction and maintenance of the fender system, which is meant to guide the ferry towards the ramp,” said the ministry.

Among those present was ministry permanent secretary Datu Safri Zainudin.
