A team of 4 2nd-year medical students from Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM) made their institution proud recently when they were crowned champions of the 11th Inter-varsity Medical Olympiad (IVMO) 2022. The IVMO is an annual event organized by the Secretariat the of Medical Faculty of UiTM. An annual event held by the Faculty of Medicine, UiTM with the aim to motivate students to strive for a better and deeper understanding of basic science knowledge of the pre-clinical and clinical medical syllabus, as well as to prepare pre-clinical students for their upcoming professional examinations.

MUCM’s Team A which comprised of Mr. Bryan Chee, Ms. Charlotte Patrick, Mr. Mohd. Shafiq and Ms. P’ng Xiu Hui, beat 13 other teams to emerge in the Group category despite having only 2 weeks to prepare for the Olympiad whilst also preparing for their university examinations. “I knew we were capable of doing well and making it into the later stages of the tournament because of Manipal’s system as compared to other universities,” said team Captain Bryan Chee.

The Olympiad is open to all pre-clinical students of Medical Schools in Malaysia and is based on the pre-clinical medical syllabus, comprising questions from all the branches of pre-clinical medicine (Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology, and Pathology).

“It feels surreal and honestly very surprising because we weren’t expecting to win this competition, considering the time we had to prepare. It’s really great to know that everything we have learned in Manipal was significant as the majority of the questions asked were similar to what we have had in our exams,” added Bryan.

Ms Charlotte Patrick attributed the team’s success to MUCM’s Faculty of Medicine professors.
“Our professors formed the backbone of our success. Every day, they gave us model questions and answers as well as tips and tricks on how to tackle such a major competition. Not to mention the endless support and motivation from each one of them,” she said.

For team member Mr Mohd Shafiq, taking part in this Olympiad has proven that he can push himself to greater heights. He said, “Previously, I thought that my potential in learning was limited but now I finally realize that I can always push my limit even further. I know IVMO is very challenging, and it will test our medical knowledge from Year 1 until Year 2. I then kept motivating myself and kept telling myself by saying “I can do it” every single day. I want to make MUCM proud as we are competing with other top Medical universities in Malaysia.”

MUCM was also represented by Mr. Sandesh Singh, Ms. Yap Ee Lyn, Ms. Harshini Velayudaraja and Ms. Samantha Lam as Team B in the Group category and Mr.Ong Yue Chuen and Mr.Ong Zhao Yang who placed 4th and 5th respectively in the Individuals category.

In addition to challenging its students in such national and international level competitions, MUCM also guides its students to find their true paths before graduation by continuously exposing to the real lives of doctors, researchers, and public health individuals through the College’s annual Post-graduate Fair and monthly Seminars and Exhibitions.
